Hello and welcome back to Afrikaans with Lindie
In this episode, I'm talking to Alex Rawlings
He's British and he speaks Afrikaans very well
We are going to talk about new Afrikaans words
and I'll give him some difficult tongue twisters to read in Afrikaans as well.
Enjoy the episode!
So Alex, I have a "challenge" for you
an "uitdaging"
An uitdaging, yes. Thank you
What's a tongue twister in Afrikaans?
Now you're asking me.
[A tongue twister is a tongknoper]
I have a few tongue twisters and I'd like you to read it once and tell me what it means
And then you should try saying it faster
Here's the first one
What does that mean?
Are you gonna show the people?
- Good. Do you know this one? - No - Not at all?
I don't know any Afrikaans tongue twisters
A good experience for me!
Slang is the name of an animal
Yeah slang is a snake
So the snake's name is Sally
It's interesting actually
I found out that in South Africa when you speak with your family
Then you don't say "jy" (you) but you will ask the name of the person
Example?
You'll say "how's it going with mom" or "what does mom want to drink"
He's saying his cousin Louw's nose
It doesn't say "does YOUR nose also itch"
It's not just for the tongue twister, it's a thing
I must say its a traditional Afrikaans thing to do
I don't do that while talking with my family
Maybe because we lived overseas for a while
But I would say "Hi dad, how's it going with YOU" not "How's it doing with DAD"
It feels too formal for me
But it's definitely a traditional Afrikaans thing to do so
It's very respectful - Yes
But I do that to my grandma. I never say "you" to my grandma; I always refer to her as "ouma" [grandma]
