It's another absolutely beautiful day here in Maine, so I thought,
"Why not do the intro outside?"
Hello and welcome back to another video. This is American English With This Guy.
I'm This Guy. My name is Brent. I've been an English
teacher in the United States for 20 years, and the goal of this channel
is to help you improve your English. In today's video,
I want to talk about phrasal verbs and even prepositions associated with
driving, and this comes from a great question
Simbha asked, and he was wondering about driving down the street. And you would
think, "Oh, down. I know what that means. Down.
No, when we say driving down the street, that simply means,
driving along the street, and I thought the best way to
teach phrasal verbs is to actually show them. So in this video, you will see
what "break down" means maybe, you saw the
thumbnail where I pretended that I was broken down
in my car. You'll see me filling up my gas tank, and you'll see a man who has
a parrot on his shoulder at that gas station. The
subtitles for this video will be accurate so
go ahead and turn those on, and if i know Eugene the Machine and Rod,
in a few days, there will probably be Russian subtitles and Brazilian
Portuguese subtitles, so again thank you guys for
adding so many of those subtitles to my videos. All right, let's check out the
footage. Right now, I am pulling out
of my garage.
I'm driving through my neighborhood, and it is trash day. You can see the
trash cans on the side of the street.
Uh-oh, there is a detour.
I am going to drive through the car wash because i noticed my windshield
it's pretty dirty. We have an unlimited pass,
so we pay $20 a month, and we can get as many
car washes as we want. I didn't plan on talking about detour,
but since we just passed one, why don't i
talk about that while i go through the car wash.
A detour is when there is a problem up ahead on the street you're trying to
travel on, and basically you have to go a different
way. Not sure what it is called in your
country, but we call it a detour. And my windshield was dirty because
I took my son to hockey practice last night,
and we had to drive late at night like 9:30, 10 o'clock, and there were a lot of
