Φανταστείτε ότι συναντήσατε ένα αρχαίο τεχνούργημα. Πόσο μπερδεμένοι θα ήσασταν από την προέλευσή του;
Χρησιμοποιούμε *τον υπερσυντέλικο (had + past participle)* για να μιλήσουμε για *χρόνο μέχρι ένα συγκεκριμένο σημείο στο παρελθόν:* "She had published her first book by the time she was ten." Χρησιμοποιούμε επίσης τον υπερσυντέλικο *για να δείξουμε τη σειρά δύο γεγονότων στο παρελθόν.* Ο υπερσυντέλικος δείχνει την προηγούμενη ενέργεια και ο απλός αόριστος την μεταγενέστερη ενέργεια: "When I got home I realized I had forgotten to buy groceries." "Sadly, the author died before he'd finished the series." "She was the most astonishing woman I had ever seen."

Χρησιμοποιούμε *το past perfect continuous* για κάτι που *ξεκίνησε στο παρελθόν και συνεχίστηκε μέχρι μια συγκεκριμένη χρονική στιγμή:* "When George died, he and Anne had been married for nearly fifty years." ή για κάτι που *συνέβη αρκετές φορές πριν από ένα σημείο στο παρελθόν και συνεχίστηκε μετά από αυτό το σημείο:* "He was a wonderful guitarist. He had been playing ever since he was a teenager." ή όταν *αναφέρουμε την εμπειρία μας μέχρι ένα σημείο στο παρελθόν:* "My thirtieth birthday was the worst day I had ever had." και όπως ακριβώς με το present perfect χρησιμοποιούμε *το for και το since* με το past perfect.

Για το μέλλον χρησιμοποιούμε επίσης *το μέλλοντα τέλειο (θα/δεν θα έχω + μετοχή αορίστου).* Αυτός ο χρόνος χρησιμοποιείται όταν μιλάμε για κάτι που *θα ολοκληρωθεί πριν από μια συγκεκριμένη χρονική στιγμή στο μέλλον.{ "Will you have gone to bed when I get back?" Μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε φράσεις όπως *by* ή *by the time* (κάποια στιγμή πριν), *in* ή *in a day's time/in two months' time/in five years' time* (στο τέλος της περιόδου) για να δώσουμε το χρονικό διάστημα στο οποίο θα ολοκληρωθεί η ενέργεια.
Practice makes perfect!
"If you study hard, you will pass the exam."
If I finish this course, I will be ready for the IELTS exam!
Ο μηδενικός υποθετικός λόγος είναι απλώς *βασισμένος σε γεγονότα.* Υπάρχει *ενεστώτας απλός* χρόνος και στις *δύο πλευρές*: "If you freeze water, it becomes solid." "Water becomes solid if you freeze it."

*Η πρώτη υπό αίρεση* χρησιμοποιείται για *μελλοντικές καταστάσεις που πιστεύουμε ότι είναι πιθανές:* "If it rains, we will stay at home." *αν/πότε + απλός ενεστώτας, θα + απαρέμφατο* Μπορείτε επίσης να πέσετε πάνω σε χρήσεις όπως *unless, as long as, as soon as* ή *in case* αντί για *if*. "I'll leave as soon as Lucy arrives." "I don't want to do it unless you treat me with respect." "I will show you to the kitchen in case you get hungry." "You can call my sister as long as you stay just friends."

to grab
If you see a good opportunity, you will grab it without hesitation.
*Ο δεύτερος υποθετικός λόγος* χρησιμοποιείται για αδύνατες καταστάσεις που είναι *απίθανο να συμβούν:* "If we moved to a bigger house, we could get another dog." Δομή: *if clause + past simple, would + infinitive* Όταν *το if ακολουθείται από το ρήμα be*, είναι γραμματικά σωστό να χρησιμοποιείται ως *were*: "if I were, if she were." Ωστόσο, μπορείτε συχνά να χρησιμοποιείτε και να ακούτε *if she/he was* και είναι επίσης *σωστό*. "I wouldn't do that if I were you." "If she was president, she would invest in education more." "If he were a little nicer, I would consider him a good match."

"If I had paid more attention, I wouldn't have to study as much." Δομή: *if + past perfect, would have + past participle*

If we had evaluated the risks more thoroughly, we would have avoided the project's major setbacks.
Νιώθετε ότι δεν βγάζει νόημα; Ας δούμε μερικά παραδείγματα: "If I hadn't got the job in Tokyo, I wouldn't be with my current partner." Δομή: *if + past perfect, would + infinitive* "It's really important. If it wasn't, I wouldn't have called you on your holiday." Δομή: *if + past simple, would have + past participle*
